It's tough to find places in the Midwest that allow overnight camping though in a more rugged setting.

Same out here, I've noticed. Most places I've researched for hiking are very clear about it - no camping. Back home on the East coast there were a lot more options if you enjoyed that sort of thing.

Yeah around here camping is allowed but only in designated areas... Which means everyone hiking is camping in the same place. Not the same as being in the wilderness alone for a few days. I like to hike and camp to get away.

Really? That seems awfully regimented.

Anyone else like to hike?
Hiking is just about the best. How many miles isn't always as important as the number of vertical feet involved though.  Also  sometimes you can find some lovely fossils, or whittle away the time turning driftwood into dragons.  Anasazi ruins, Hill Country, hawk mountain, beaver dams, or just a stroll down the Strand it is all wonderful.
To be entirely alone, or to meet other hikers, every trail is different, and can be new each time you hike it.  If I hadn't been hiking I wouldn't have ended up climbing waterfalls, or sneaking over a frozen dam.

If you are having problems finding places to camp overnight you can check out local retreats too.  I was always able to find a place, but it helps to know someone in the area you are going so chatting with other hikers, or finding a lodge is very helpful too.

If you are open air camping or making a snow lodge to stay in, you may go unnoticed.  I have camped in a lot of places, but I didn't always ask permission first.

No one ever really gave me a hard time about it because I don't get drunk, litter, or do the things they worry about.  Usually if you are cool towards others, they are cool towards you.
